Australia’s Albanese tackles China paradox with shrewd diplomacy

TOKYO — Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited Beijing on Nov. 6, the first visit to China by an Australian leader in seven and a half years. The travel marked a long-awaited thaw in ties between Beijing and Canberra.
During his visit, Albanese and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to normalize diplomatic ties and work toward expanding bilateral trade. Relations between the two countries have been at a historic low, with their ministerial exchanges having been suspended at one point.
