ÄMHULT, Sweden—In a continuation of its 80th anniversary celebration, Ikea will be introducing a third collection that is based designs from the past.
Debuting at stores in January 2024, the next edition of the Nytillverkad collection embraces iconic pieces from the 1960s and ‘70s, emphasizing the bold shapes, optimistic colors and textures that marked those decades.
Among the new pieces is the Baggboda side table, which takes its inspiration from the Cromi side table first developed by designer Karin Mobring. Mobring, who joined Ikea in 1964, became one of the company’s most productive and trend-setting designers, developing more than 100 products. The Baggboda table will be available in white or light yellow with a chrome-plated frame.
Gillis Lundgren, who joined Ikea in the mid-1950s, worked with Ingvar Kamprad to help steer the company to where it is today. Lundgren helped develop the Ikea logotype, illustrated catalog covers and photographed products, as well as working as a furniture designer. For the new collection, the company is reimagining his Mila armchair as the Dyvlinge swivel armchair and his Puck armchair from 1969 as the now-named Sotenäs.
Other items in the third round of the Nytillverkad collection are some eye-catching patterns of the 1960s and ‘70s making a comeback as Streckfly cushion covers and Ängsfibbla pre-cut fabric, and the Skogstrundra vase, designed by Ehlen Johansson.
“Vintage furniture has made a big comeback lately, and there’s been a growing demand for certain Ikea products that have become collector’s favorites,” said Johan Ejdemo, global designer manager. “That is why we decided to bring back a selection of our design icons. To us, these products are the essence of democratic design.”
