From the streets of Bedrock City to your own private graveyard, and homes that look as though they have landed from outer space, 2023 saw some seriously quirky properties hit the market across Australia.

While it’s often wise to try and appeal to the masses in order to secure a quick sale – for these sellers, it’s all about finding their niche.

Here is a roundup of some of the most weird and wonderful properties to be listed on realestate.com.au this year.

Out of this world

With six cantilevered wings suspended over an engineered lake ecosystem, the exterior of this off-grid residence in Far North Queensland is akin to a futuristic spaceship.

Designed by architect Charles Wright, Alkira Resort House at 3726 Cape Tribulation Road, Cape Tribulation spans 30ha with 600m of private beach frontage.

Its listing described it as exemplifying “off-grid luxury” and a model for “carbon-neutral, sustainable living.”

Spanning 1059sqm of living space, it is designed to accommodate 12 guests, and has been constructed from concrete, glass and steel to be a category 5 cyclone-proof construction.

Built in 2013, the original owner, who was an avid stamp collector and property developer, drew inspiration for the swimming pool shape and surrounding roofline from the silhouette of the head on the “One Pound Jimmy” Australian postage stamp from the 1950s.

“It is something else,” sales agent Lynn Malone, from Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty, Port Douglas, said.

“We’ve got two groups right now who are considering it as a commercial resort asset.”

Flintstone House

Looking like something straight out of Bedrock City and described in its listing as a “thrilling expression of true organic architecture,” Hollander House in Newport, Sydney has been dubbed the Flintstone House for its curves and hand-formed ferro cement construction.

The three bedroom home at 81 Grandview Drive was built in the late 1960s by architect David Hollander and it recently sold for $2,582,000 – $357,000 more than expected.

The midweek auction had three registered bidders, with two competing buyers and it eventually sold after the auction to a local family who have loved the home since childhood.

Igloo House

It is fair to say this twin dome igloo design home in Kangaroo Flat, Victoria is few and far between.

Its listing describes the three bedroom, one bathroom property as having a “unique yet functional layout.”

It’s currently on the market for $430,000 – $450,000. Picture: realestate.com.au

The corner allotment spans 655sqm, and the property’s features include undercover parking, a swimming pool, a storage shed and space for a boat or trailer.

It has a price guide of $430,000 – $450,000.
