As celebrities from Justin Bieber to Michael B. Jordan step up with statements in favor of Black Lives Matter, another joins the conversation. Will Smith has uploaded several Instagram Stores and a #BlackoutTuesday post, simultaneously linking out to the Obama Foundation in his bio, and his latest initiative is a brief montage of clips in support of the ongoing protests, dubbed No Justice, No Peace in homage to a popular protester chant.
“There’s a historical river that is running red with the blood of truth tellers,” Smith himself says at the beginning of the clip. Abetted by a Frederick Douglass quote — “The thing worse than rebellion is the thing that causes rebellion.” — Smith’s video melds imagery from a variety of sources both contemporary and historic. Imagery of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela is intercut with shots of the recent protests and social media clips from Barack Obama, 12-year-old Keedron Bryant, Dream Defenders co-founder Phillip Agnew and viral protestor Curtis Hayes Jr., highlighting the ongoing movement to fight racial injustice in America.
